It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of former CSCJA Executive Director Frank McArdle.
Over his more than 20-year tenure, Frank had an extraordinary impact on the Association and on so many of its members individually. Passionate about the Association and its work, he helped steer it through the implementation of the Quadrennial Commission process, built lasting partnerships, and expanded its mandate and committee work. His commitment helped shape the Association we know today.
Yet many will remember Frank just as warmly for the personal qualities he brought to that work. Humble and kind, with a wonderful sense of humour, he never missed an opportunity to express appreciation or make someone feel valued. He understood that relationships were at the heart of the Association, and he nurtured them with care.
Frank’s remarkable life took him from professional hockey to advertising, and later to a career in law. He was a fascinating storyteller, with experiences and observations that made time in his company memorable.
In 2018, Frank made a final, important contribution to the Association by supporting the search and onboarding of our current Executive Director, Stephanie Lockhart. He was an important mentor and friend who passed on to her his entrenched passion for the Association.
On behalf of the Association, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his spouse, former Chief Justice of Canada Beverley McLachlin, and to his family, friends, and all who had the sincere pleasure to know him.
We invite members to share a personal memory or message of condolence on our private tribute board. Password: CSCJA2026
These messages will be shared with his family as a remembrance of the many lives he touched.
Frank leaves an enduring legacy in the Association and in the friendships he built across the country. He will be deeply missed.
