Bill S-219, the Judicial Independence Day Act, sponsored by Senator Pierre Moreau, proposes to officially designate January 11 of each year as “Judicial Independence Day” in Canada. This would be an important and valuable initiative to educate Canadians on the meaning of judicial independence and its importance to democracy in Canada. The bill passed its second reading in the Senate and is currently under consideration by the Standing Senate Committee on Human Rights.

Our immediate past President and current President of the IAJ-ANAO Regional Group, Justice Clayton Conlan, has been invited to appear before the committee on Monday, June 8, 2026. The CSCJA is pleased to support this bill and invites members to listen to the live stream at 4:00 p.m. ET.
